The Return
Hexagram 24

The Fire Rat Month, Animal by Animal
The Pig peaks early,
The Rat opens,
The Ox takes charge,
The Tiger could falter,
The Rabbit questions,
The Dragon rejoices,
The Snake hangs out,
The Horse pulls up,
The Sheep: pulls up alongside,
The Monkey shines
The Rooster may be unpredictable
and
The Dog settles in till February. Good idea.

Fire Rat

Winter is here: the Fire Rat Month, 2019.
Look to my coming at first light.” Gandalf. The Two Towers. JRR Tolkien.

Rat Month favours communication. Around this time of year, while it’s dark and cold, we pause awhile. We gather and share our experience of the Year and rest up. Human beings are essentially programmed to overeat, huddle together and catch up now until the thaw of February.

When a Rat Month opens into a Rat Year however, the invitation is to a much longer conversation. This month plumbs the depths not only of this year’s Winter but the Winter of the Great Year or tai sui. The Great Year lasts twelve years and the Rat is in effect one month of that Great Year. We are now fast within a prolonged period of cold and damp. There’s time to think about where we have been and where we are going.

And we are fast into a time of world uncertainty which may be reflected in our homes, our workplaces and elsewhere. As ice caps melt, many of the foundations of our way of life are under threat. In China, Yemen, sub-Saharan Africa, Myanmar and Kashmir as well as in Westminster and Washington we are at the mercy of poor choices both of lifestyle and ruler. Time to re-consider perhaps. Now’s the time.

Water of course also represents the emotions, that other mute mode of communication. The deepest Water speaks not only of physical damp but of deep feeling. All Water is forever seeking all other Water just as the most profound feelings are always seeking expression. We share our feelings in order to connect, to make sense of them and in some cases to relieve them. That’s why we huddle together in mid-Winter.

The tai sui lasts twelve years; this deep cold has been a dozen years in coming, the spring remains more than a year away.

Whether we are talking globally, politically, at home or at work, at our desks or our dinner tables, now is an opportunity to consider where we go next. There are hints as to when and where to do what in this missive but your personal response is just that: personal. We get the leaders we deserve and the times we deserve. So when we are dissatisfied with them we are well advised to look within. Spring follows Winter just as Dawn follows night.
Richard Ashworth December 2019

Where to be in December.
Summary: result!
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 8.
Stars 6 and 8 combine authority and wealth. Expertise and practice pay off. Work and practice here for property gains and notoriety. Additional Water constitutes a 1 thus making an abundant 168. Younger son may inherit. Settling here encourages the eccentric – no harm in that. If you have a door here, enter by it as often as you can.
Assist: Water: blue/black and/or a bowl changed daily.

Where not to be in December.
Summary: potentially embarrassing
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue Month Star: 5. Month san sha The vigorous 3 is briefly blighted by the 5 Star. Facing the 5 ie facing South may embolden but occupying the South carries the risk of embarrassing cash flow issues. The Fire here may shine unwelcome light. Not much help here till January. Possible digestive issues too – there’s a surprise!
AnchorMitigate: Metal: but don’t overdo it. Music box the most effective counter.
