The Month of the Metal Dog, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuances dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 84, 96; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) It may be demanding to contain yourself when bitterness is so tempting.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) A time of learning studded with potential distractions.

Rats (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). You may frequently feel blocked. There are advantages in stillness.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) Many cries for help. Tat tvam asi.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Increased power, not necessarily an increase in sound judgement.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#), As fired up as you get. Use wisely.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Expect direct confrontation. Know how to tack into a facing wind.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) you’re mostly in a supporting role.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Confident could turn to brash during this time of learning. No need for discomfort.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) Traditionally a time for splits and fragmentation. Locate East to pre-empt.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) Little support; park both ambition and risk. For now.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) Supported in unfamiliar ways. You’re probably not – in the nicest possible way – in the driving seat.

* Chinese Months start later than European ones. #You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this.

A Helpful Day
Thursday 13th October, Earth Pig, Well, Remove (7) **** substitution.
Pig and Tiger will co-operate on this helpful Remove Day. Time to clear up maybe and make space for provisions to see us through Winter. The accent is on maintaining resources. Check in with your Father.
Especially good timing for: Rabbit Sheep Tiger.
Activity: Tiger NE3 around 65º ENE for discovery.

Not so Helpful
Tuesday 18th October, Wood Dragon, Wings, Destruction (2) **** hazardous.
Travelling today other than for teaching or healing may prove a distraction; check tyres, oil, Water, other types of fuel. Take pack lunch! Slowest for Dogs & Rabbits who are best off staying home. Markets beware.
Activity: Monkey SW3 around 240º WSW for hands-on assistance.
Straight paths for: Water(92) Wood(44) Fire(56) Monkey; Water(72) Wood(84) Fire(96) Rat, Wood(45) Fire(57) Earth(69) Metal(81) Rooster

A Helpful Location.
North East, Wealth Star: Tai sui (Tiger) or Year Star: 8 Month Star: 6.
Still the place of prosperity. Add East>North East>North to your he tu journeys for this month. You may feel this journey supporting spirituality, parenthood, sons, aspiration and the deepest connection as you place the crystals. If you sleep eat or work in the North East it will also work to just stay put. Summon your angels here.
Support: A little Water – a bowl, the colour blue – makes prosperous 1:6:8.

Not so Helpful.
West, Intervention: Year Star: 7; Month Star: 5. Annual toe far. Dragon Virtue Month wu huang
The Pits. Occupation here has of course been tricky all year. Now even more so. Risks include: throat and other ailments, disputes and indiscretion. Steer clear if you can. If you must be here, orient wisely. Most vulnerable is the Youngest Daughter.
Improve: with t’ang lungMetal e.g. 6 Pipe Metal windchime.

The Month of the Metal Dog – the shape of the month.
Reality Bites.
“Across the Northern sky all the birds are leaving.” Who knows where the time goes? Sandy Denny.

I’m out sweeping the decking on a sharp autumn day. The oaks appear to have panicked, fruiting then shedding way earlier than usual and the floor is a carpet of mast. I’m told this happens when they don’t get enough rain. The hazels too have grown especially fast, knowing I guess, that there’s safety in numbers. There’s some serious cutting back due, though I’ll spare the fresh rods to the South as that is exactly where height is needed as we enter the 9th Chinese Fate. The far side of the road beyond is lined with leathery conkers.

The 3 kua of the month implies a burst of unseasonable energy. This burst is likely to hit between the 17th and the 20th during what is called the “Hidden Stem”. For some it may prove overpowering. Such a burst is quite common in the middle of October but it’s not always this strong. It’s adrenaline to some, to others a sharp pushback, but we’ll likely all feel it. There’s a long list of bloody battles at this point in Dog months going back centuries and at least two world market collapses (1929 & 1987). Watch this space.

On the other hand, my calculations suggest that many individual days favour Dragons & Oxen (Dragon: 10th, 11th  22nd Oct;  Ox: 19th 27th Oct; Both:14th, 15th, 23rd, 26th, 27th Oct and 4th & 7th Nov) during a month that overall is not empowering for them, Dragon and Dog of course being diametrically opposed on calendar, clock and compass. If you find either Ox or Dragon anywhere in your ba zi you might make a point of employing those days fruitfully and the Force will tend to be with you.

I have reluctantly cut back the overgrown buddleia in the front garden overlooking the road. We’re still seeing a few bees even now and I hate to discourage them at this time of beepocalypse. They love the purple blooms, butterflies do too. But we’re way beyond the growing season; it’s not June anymore.

The one liner I often use for the Metal Dog in teaching ba zi (More info here) is that its bite is actually worse than its bark. The Yang Earth of the Dog is enforced by the Metal Stem Geng g . There’s a lingering bitterness about the combination of these two characters. Consider anyone you might know born in 1970: do you detect an unresolved resentment? This is the Yang Metal, cutting in all sorts of senses. It’s resolvable of course just as Metal is resolved by Water. And Water is communication, the solution to all heartache. Expect to minister to that bitterness this month mostly by listening, I suggest. Nothing makes more positive difference.

The Yang Metal Stem, Geng is the one that qualifies the Tiger of the Austerity Year 2010; the previous such year -1950 – was a pretty lean time too. And of course cutting back is happening on higher levels than the domestic. FYI: best day for cutting, pruning or lopping is the Remove Day 13th October.

So now the Equinox is past and the Yin is in the ascendant. Yin can mean the decay that is arrested by cutting, but also the first of the re-birth that follows. The monthly Hexagram, Bo Stripping (Mountain over Earth) represents the denuding of trees and the coming damp and darkness. Next up is Kun The Receptive (Earth over Earth) – as dark as it gets and then Fu, the Return, which speaks for itself.

As I take the cuttings to the garden waste bin I notice how shiny the fallen conkers are. They look good enough to eat.
